READ – Rights Education and Development Centre works with sanitary worker communities, particularly Dalit and Arunthathiyar communities in Tamil Nadu, who continue to face social exclusion, unsafe working conditions, and limited access to opportunities. Due to prolonged exposure to hazardous environments, many sanitary workers suffer from health issues such as lung infections, asthma, and other occupational illnesses. Economic hardship and social discrimination also contribute to school dropouts and limited access to higher education among children from these communities. READ supports children through Child Support Centres that provide quality education, learning support, important day celebrations, and life skill activities. Special preparatory coaching is provided for 10th and 12th standard students, along with educational and sports materials to encourage continued learning. READ also organizes regular medical camps, health awareness sessions, and hygiene education programs for workers and families. In addition, legal aid awareness programs support access to PF claims, PAN cards, and essential documentation. Through collaboration with government departments, READ facilitates access to welfare board enrolment, PMJJBY insurance, and other social protection schemes to improve the dignity, health, and social security of sanitary worker communities.
